Why Can You Get “Heat Stroke” in Water?

Water Temperature is Key

When pool water temperature is too high (typically above 32°C / 90°F), or when the surface water of outdoor lakes and ponds heats up significantly under the blazing sun, the efficiency of human body heat dissipation in water plummets.

  • The human body’s normal core temperature is about 37°C (98.6°F)
  • When water temperature approaches or exceeds skin temperature (about 33°C / 91°F), the direction of heat transfer reverses

IV. Scientific Prevention: Enjoy the Cool Without Falling into the Heat Trap

“Three Checks” Before Entering the Water:

  • Check Water Temperature: Ideal pool temperature is 26-28°C (79-82°F). Be cautious above 30°C (86°F); sustained exercise is not recommended above 32°C (90°F).
  • Check Your Own Condition: Avoid high-intensity swimming when already feeling hot or sleep-deprived.
  • Check Hydration: Drink about 500ml (17 oz) of water 2 hours before swimming. Avoid swimming on a completely empty or overly full stomach.

“Four Notes” While in the Water:

  • Swim in Segments, Rest Often: Every 15-20 minutes, get out or rest in shallow water for 5 minutes to assess your true condition.
  • Lift Your Head, Release Heat: Use a head-up breaststroke or occasionally lift your head during freestyle to let your head dissipate heat.
  • Listen to Your Body, Not Your Ego: Stop immediately if you feel abnormally fatigued. Don’t “push through the last few laps.”
  • Use the Buddy System, Watch Each Other: Swim with a partner and watch for signs like unusual complexion or uncoordinated movements.

The “Critical 30 Minutes” After Exiting the Water:

  • Exit Gradually: Stand and adapt in shallow water for 2-3 minutes to avoid postural hypotension.
  • Replenish Electrolytes: Drink a sports drink or lightly salted water, not just pure or ice-cold water.
  • Cool Down Slowly in Shade: Use lukewarm water for a shower. Avoid immediately entering a strongly air-conditioned room.
  • Continue Monitoring: Heat stroke symptoms may fully manifest up to 30 minutes after leaving the water.

V. Emergency Response: Remember the Specifics of “Waterside Heat Stroke”

If you notice someone (or yourself) showing suspected symptoms:

Immediate Action – Four Steps:

  • Out of Water: Immediately help the person leave the water and move to a cool, ventilated area.
  • Lie Flat: Lay the person down and elevate their feet to promote blood flow back to the brain.
  • Cool Down:
    • Moisten the skin with lukewarm water (not ice water) and fan the person.
    • Focus on cooling areas with major blood vessels: neck, armpits, and groin.
    • Do NOT jump into a cold pool to cool down — this may cause severe blood vessel contraction and worsen the crisis.
  • Call for Help: If the person is confused or has a significantly elevated temperature, call emergency services immediately.

Special Populations Need Extra Attention

  • Children: Their thermoregulation system is not fully developed, and excitement can mask discomfort.
  • The Elderly: The elderly often have a diminished perception of temperature changes, making frequent hot spring users among them particularly vulnerable.
  • People with Cardiovascular Conditions: Hot and humid environments put extra strain on the heart.
  • People Exercising for Weight Loss: They may wrongly believe “sweating means it’s working” and overexert themselves.
